snow

Every winter snowfalls occur on Matroosberg. Sometimes only up on the peak, but with heavy snowfalls all the way down to the farmhouse and even down to the tar road. During and shortly after snowfalls our phone line are often out of order, or otherwise engaged all the time as we get thousands of calls about the snow. As a free service to our customers we send out sms's to inform them about the snow conditions.

There are four ways of getting to the snow
  • Drive up our 4x4 trail with a 4x4 vehicle to get to the snow
  • Hike up to the snow (this can take from 30 minutes to 4 hours, depending on how low down the snow is)
  • Book a seat on our Snow Safari's and we take you up the mountain on our open 4x4 trucks. These safari's are weather permitting
  • Wait till the snow fall all the way down to the farmhouse and you can drive to it with a car.

Also remember that at the lower altitudes (farmhouse and foot of the mountain) the snow melts very quickly and can be gone within one to one and a half days. Up at the peak patches of snow can last for months, sometimes up to November.

Things to consider:

On the 4x4 trail: During high demand snow periods the cut-off time for entry onto the trail is 11:00, in order to have one way traffic going up in the morning. 4x4's may not turn back before 13:00. This ensures one-way traffic coming down in the afternoon. For safety reasons no exceptions will be allowed

When hiking: For safety reasons hikers must be back at reception at least 90 minutes before sunset. Bear this in mind when planning your outing because if you arrive to late to make it up to the snow and back you would not be allowed onto the hiking trail. For safety reasons no exceptions will be allowed.
